Book Review: Shadows of Sherwood

Author: Kekla Magoon

Re-told myths and twisted fairy tales are quite popular these days. Shadows of Sherwood is Book 1 of the “Robyn Hoodlum” adventures. Kekla Magoon sets this version of Sherwood in a near-future urban jungle.

Robyn is a rich girl with the odd habit of breaking into junk yards to steal obsolete electronics. One night, she sneaks home to her mansion in Nott City only to discover her parents were beaten and kidnapped. Thus starts her adventure in the working-class, inner-city Sherwood.

As with any good Robin Hood tale, she meets up with all the requisite characters: Scarlett – the electronics wizard. Tucker – the divinity student. Merryan – the villain’s niece.

Robyn and her band of parkour experts steal from the corrupt dictator, Crown, and redistribute food and supplies to the increasingly poor and desperate citizens. Robyn finds herself at the head of a rebellion.

The books have plenty of heists, car chases, moments of introspection, friendship and adventure. The trilogy is a satisfying romp through a new landscape via an old and favorite tale.
